Fake it ’til you BECOME it

So for those of you who have never experienced the power of the app TED you really need to download it. The website lists all these inspirational talks sponsored by the TED group and they are always interesting to browse through.

After getting LASIK eye surgery I had a lot of time sitting home today to listen to some of these talks one of which I found particularly interesting. Amy Cuddy speaks on “Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are” and really delves into the psychology behind your own body language other than those those around you. Her hypothesis was this: can our own body language change how we see ourselves? And she proves her hypothesis true.

Amy shows the audience that by”faking it ’til you become it” your body language tricks your mind into adapting the image your body is portraying. She suggests that if you fake power poses like standing strong and upright in meetings or taking up space at a table, whether your personality truly is strong and domineering as you portray if you consistently fake it and force your body language to that portrayal your mind will allow your to ACTUALLY become that. She studied that those individuals standing in postures of confidence even when they don’t feel confident tended to raise their internal testosterone levels and lower their cortisol (stress) levels.

We always talk in the Army about faking it til we make it. Here Amy suggests that if we keep working on faking it we will become it and believe it. Especially as females in the Army, we have a tendency to shrink into poses that are powerless especially next to dominant males. Instead we need to work on practicing power poses especially when interacting with our male counterparts to prove our own power in the work force.

I suggest everyone watch Amy Cuddy’s video on TED she is definitely hailed by the GIRLS IN GREEN!

So me and Jackie did a killer workout the other day that I think everyone should try. You know we are big on circuits so grab a partner and run itself ragged!

Ropes with TRX
-one partner swings ropes for one minute while the other does TRX ab exercises for a minute, once complete both exercises move onto the next piece of the circuit.

Toe touches with burpee to barbell row
– do as many toe touches until your partner is complete with five burpee to barbell row: this exercise is a burpee with weights when you get to the ground after you do your first push-up do a triceps row on the right arm, then another push-up and a tricep row on the left hand side, jump after you get up and the do bicep curl to overhead

2min 5.0 uphill at your two mile run time and 1 min 15.0 uphill backwards at 3.3

Once you are complete with the circuit start it all the way through without rest and repeat four times.

Recently my mom sent me a Newsweek article entitled “American Women Have it Wrong” written by former Harvard professor and President of Barnard College, Mrs. Debora Spar. The article discussed how hard it is for women to work and have a family. She hails women for being able to make sacrifices but points out that we may not be able to “have it all”: Debora writes about the “women’s problem” that still exists n the workplace and states

A problem that relates deeply and intimately to the bleak roster of numbers that tell this story….part of this intractable problem is tied to the act that women in this country are struggling far more than is necessary not only to have the ephemeral “all” but to do it all alone

She suggests that in order to try and find a balance in life, women after make sacrifices sometimes to their families and sometimes to their work. These sacrifices give Type A women the feeling like they will never be good enough. Instead of seeking help, they keep trying to go it alone.

Debora states that her solution to this issue would be for women to go back to their roots and reach out to their female counterparts.

It is time now to go back to channel the passion of our political foremothers and put it again to good use.

By this, Mrs. Spar hails that women need to start building networks and working together. She believes that two strong women with great ideas will be even stronger combining their intellect and aiding each other.

This article truly needs to be read by all working women especially those in the military. I always see women trying to make their way by taking down and taking out everyone else int heir path. Without working together, which is something the Army promotes to begin with, women will not succeed.

Unfortunately, many type A women driven to succeed feel that the only way to make it is on your own. We need to be able to push our egos aside Girls in Green and reach out to network for success. Using your female network systems will take you great places and place you where you want to be with your career.
